HRH The Duchess of
Cambridge has become Scouting’s newest volunteer and will help at her local cub
packs and beaver colonies, Clarence House has announced.
The Duchess, who joins 66,000 girls and 40,000
female leaders in Scouting, will help out at groups close to where she lives.
Her Royal Highness also hopes to help with activities in other parts of the
United Kingdom as opportunity arises. The announcement comes as a great
endorsement of Scouting’s commitment to allow adults to volunteer their time on
a flexible basis. The Duchess will help run a variety of activities relevant to
her skills and interests. This could include running games, teaching first aid
or cooking on campfires.

Searching for the next District
Commissioner
The Duchess
of Cambridge has just joined the Scouts and Lea Valley District Scouts are about to
follow her example in their search for an inspiring new District
Commissioner. It’s a flexible volunteer role in the biggest co-ed youth
organisation in the UK and, like the Duchess, you will be enjoying the
company of some of the most enthusiastic people on the planet.
After five years at
the helm of the thriving Lea Valley District, Liz Burnham has decided to step
down to devote more time to her family. She says, “I would not have missed it
for the world. It’s been an exciting and hectic time but one where I could be
flexible. I admire the Duchess and her endorsement of Scouting. She will not
regret one minute spent with today’s enthusiastic and inquisitive young people.
And, like me, her volunteer role will give her time to do other things.”
County Commissioners
Chris Bent and Frances Craven, who are leading the search for the new
District Commissioner say, "Previous
management experience or a management qualification is essential. What is
just as important is that you bring the dedicated leadership and skills
to push Lea Valley District forward. The successful
candidate will lead one of the most thriving Districts in the county with a team
of over 100 enthusiastic adult volunteers and outstanding growth from 271 in
2006 to around 470 today. No
Scouting experience is necessary since we will be providing a full induction to
Scouting as part of the support package.”
To apply or nominate someone go to
www.bedfordshirescouts.org.uk and complete the District Commissioner
nomination form. Closing date for nominations is 21st January.
