BT Community Champions

In Lea Valley District we like to call the adults who volunteer their time to be leaders "Heroes", BT calls them Community Champions, and they have an award scheme directed at these BT employees, who can apply for cash grants for the benefit of the local community group where they volunteer.

It was through this award scheme that Geoff Wright (ADC General Duties), and an Operations Manager in the Watford Customer Service Team for BT Openreach, obtained a £500 award for hand held GPS devices.

Pictured above: Bill Davidson, Senior Operations Manager for the Watford Customer Service Team, hands Geoff his Community Champions Award. Flanked by Mark Webb (Won-tolla) and Graham Holt, a work colleague of Geoff's and also a Cub Scout Leader for the 3rd Perivale Scout Group in the Greenford District, holding 2 of the Garmin eTrex GPS devices purchased with the award.

Bill Davidson said "It's fantastic that so many groups continue to benefit from the tremendous support and commitment of BT employees and the cash grants which they have obtained through the BT Community Champions award scheme."

On receiving his award Geoff said "Now our Scouts have no excuse for getting lost! These GPS devices will help build on their map and compass skills as well as enable them to navigate using modern technology, something most groups in our District could not afford to buy had it not been for the BT award".

The Garmin eTrex is a handheld full-function GPS device. When moving, the eTrex provides you with your speed, direction of movement, time, distance to destination, and more. With these basic features, the eTrex can provide one more critical benefit: peace of mind. You'll know where you are, where you've been, and where you  are going. And since you'll always know the way back home, you can concentrate on what you set out to do - enjoy the great outdoors.

The GPS devices are expected to be used a great deal in the coming year, especially with the recent launch of a brand new Hikes Away Badge.

Lea Valley District would like to say a massive THANK YOU to BT and to Geoff our very own "Community Champion" and Hero!
