Islam Awareness Evening

On Thursday 30th November, members from 5 Lea Valley Groups attended an Islam Awareness Evening, hosted by Beech Hill Scout Group, at The Luton Central Mosque. The aim of the evening was to give beavers, cubs, scouts and explorer scouts the opportunity to gain the World Faiths badge by providing them with a chance to visit the Mosque and find out about the Islamic faith.

On the first floor of the Mosque, there was a display of posters which gave details of the Islam Faith. The Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorer Scouts were asked to spend some time looking at the posters to learn about the Beliefs and the 5 Pillars of Islam.

After spending a few minutes learning, the young members were invited to ask any questions they may have. One interesting question was "Where are the 5 pillars of Islam?", it was explained that the 5 Pillars weren't actually a part of a building, they are the framework of a Muslim's life. A set of rules or "laws", in a way, like the Cub or Scout Law.

Once the evening prayers had finished, everyone went to the ground floor prayer room, where they were told about the customs and the pictures of the Haram mosque in Makkah and The Prophet Muhammad's (Peace be Upon Him) Mosque in Madinah. The prayer time clocks were also explained.

The youth members were then split into their groups and a Fun Islamic Quiz was held. With questions ranging from "Name 3 of the five Pillars of Islam" to "What times are the first prayers in the day" amongst many other. After 30 minutes of questioning, Leagrave Scout Group emerged as the winners, closely followed by Caddington Scout Group.

Many thanks go to Beech Hill Scout Group and the Leaders for organising the evening. All youth members that attended have either gained or almost gained their World Faiths Badge.
