Fresh from his championship win in a conker contest, nine-year-old cub
scout Alfie Spillane, who suffers from cerebral palsy, has attended his
first camp.
Alfie entered the depths of Harmergreen Wood, near Welwyn, along with 17
other cub scouts and their leaders from Luton's Lea Valley District. He
braved the weekend rain showers to take part in traditional scouting
activities and learnt new skills.
In true scouting spirit, he built and outdoor shelter from natural
materials helped by scout leader Sue Doyle. The cubs also built fires
and made yoghurt pot catapults that actually worked. They took part in
challenging tracking exercises where they had to follow clues through
the wood and find the person who had left them.
After their evening meal the cubs gave loud and enthusiastic support at
their camp fire with plenty of action songs.
Alfie's mother Angy said: "He thoroughly enjoyed his first camp and
can't wait for the next one."
Alfie is a special needs pupil at Weatherfield School in Dunstable and
has suffered from a rare form of cerebral palsy from birth.
Despite severe learning difficulties, he has shown excellent progress
since joining the cubs, including a decisive win at the Lea Valley
District Cub Scout conker competition. |
